Luxury and the Digital Question: Presence Without Dilution
Luxury houses face a particular digital challenge: how to be visible and accessible without surrendering the codes of rarity and control that define the category.
For decades, luxury's relationship with digital channels was hesitant by design — scarcity, ceremony and control sat uneasily with the openness of the web. That hesitation is no longer tenable: the luxury client journey now begins online in the overwhelming majority of cases, even when it concludes in a boutique or private salon.
The resolution is not to digitize everything but to translate the house's codes into digital form. A luxury website should feel like the brand's flagship: deliberate pacing, exceptional materials — here, photography, typography and language — and a sense that the visitor has entered somewhere considered. E-commerce, where appropriate, can be selective: chosen pieces, controlled presentation, service-led fulfilment.
Search visibility deserves particular attention. High-intent international clients search in their own languages for the categories luxury houses own. A maison invisible in those results cedes the conversation to resellers and grey-market actors — losing both revenue and narrative control.
The houses navigating this best treat digital not as a sales channel bolted onto heritage, but as a contemporary expression of the same standards: precision, beauty and control, extended to a new medium.
